Second-half comeback secures winning start

Sunday saw us kick off our 26/27 campaign with a hard-fought comeback victory over Harpenden, and what a way to start! 

It was a frustrating first 45, with Harpenden starting strong. We struggled to settle into the game, and the visitors quickly took a two-goal lead, leaving us with work to do at the break. 

Despite our slow start, we came out fighting in the second half, with a few tweaks to our shape completely changing the game. With new energy, we began to control possession, push Harpenden deeper and turn that pressure into chances. 

The breakthrough eventually came from the penalty spot. A long throw from Player of the Match Charlotte Fleming sent us through on goal, but as the chance opened up, Brooke Haylock was brought down inside the area. With the pressure on and the comeback beginning to take shape, last season’s top scorer stepped up. Making no mistake, Haylock sent the keeper the wrong way, allowing us back into the game.

And it wasn't long before the pressure paid off as we drew ourselves level, and when the equaliser came, it was something special. Ammarah Ali stood over a free kick in a dangerous position and produced an outstanding effort that looped over the defence and into the back of the net to make it 2-2. 

With the momentum firmly on our side, we pushed for the winner. A corner caused chaos in the Harpenden box, with a handball on the line giving us another opportunity from 12 yards. Once again, Haylock kept her cool to make it 3-2.

From 2-0 down to 3-2 winners, the second half was a completely different story. The fight, character, and belief shown in turning the game around made it a perfect way to begin our campaign.

Three points secured. What a comeback.
